Litter is killing our wildlife

If you throw garbage in the street it ends up killing wildlife in the countryside, but did you know it also kills marine animals like whales, turtles, seals and seabirds? A plastic bottle thrown out of a car window will be crushed by the wheels of vehicles, and break down to the point where it will find its way down a drain. Once in the drain, the journey to the beaches of the world is inevitable. The water in drains ends up in rivers, from rivers it goes out to sea and then finishes on the beach. Around 80–85% of all garbage found on beaches is believed to have originated from rivers. Another 10–12% is thrown over the side of commercial ships and ferries, and the remaining 3–5% is left on the beach following BBQs and parties. • These figures vary, depending on where you are in the world.
